proof of return/onward travel?

Help
American airlines is telling me that without a return ticket from Ecuador they can't let me leave the country. Oh yeh I'm traveling to Ecuador from Denver in Sept. and bought a oneway ticket because I quit my job and will travel until the money runs out. The RTW travelers must know how to deal with this. Someone please teach me there wise ways.

This has been discussed. I would do a search, maybe someone has specific experience with American Airlines. I believe there is no simple answer. There problem is dealing with airline policy. I would get all your document to prove your onward travel and keep fighting till you get to someone high enough who understands you are not required to have a rt ticket. I think many people in your situation just buy a rt ticke because it is not much more money and solves the problem.

[I would be interested in finding out what the final out come will be as I plan on purchasing a ticket in Mexico for a a one way to Quito this year. You may try another airline.

BTW, I would check website or call the consulate for the country you are goin to. Ask for their requirement for entry and one of the items will be rt ticket *or* proof of onward travel. If possible get something in writing.

Think about this, why would you need a rt ticket but when you over land there is no problem. It is just unusual to have a oneway ticket and they are suspicous of you and need to be convinced (once you find someone who understands this).

well no great news the option i found is to by a fully refundable return ticket and refund when i leave the US. as for explaining my situation and finding a solution i have talked to three people at the Ecuadorian consulate and have not found that right person yet. I think the refundable ticket will do it though.

I think we need to get a clear answer on this for everybody, b/c it will come up again. I am willing to make calls and follow up. If people have ideas on whom to contact please email them to me. (I wouldn't post it here because flooding a person with calls is only going to piss people off.)
