From Madras to Thailand? Prices? Advice? Experience?
 

As quite a few, I am stuck in India, not having the budget to go to China, not having the proper paperwork to go to Myanmar. And as I am not planning on getting back to Pakistan, I think the boat is going to be very likely.
Has anyone done it recently either by boat or by plane? Any idea of the costs? Anyone with a plan B?
PS: The bike is... a sidecar. Just to make things a bit more difficult (k100rs + Ural)

I shipped my bike a BMW R 1200 GS Adventure from Kolkata to Singapore with Singapore Airlines end of September this year and it was first of all a major hassle to export the bike which was imported on Carnet via Armitsar. Secondly it was really expensive but I didn't have any other option as I had to get back to my work in Thailand. However the shipping agent I was using claimed that to sea freight the bike wouldn't be expensive and somewhat easier to export it.

In January 2008 we shipped our DL650 by air from Chennai to Bangkok by Malaysia Airlines (MASKargo), it went via Kuala Lumpur, and the total cost was about 600 euros. The Indian end was a bit of a pain with the
paperwork, crating, etc., but in Thailand it was a breeze. Our shipping agent was Shell Air (shellairmaa at gmail dot com), and they seemed quite efficient.

Should be possible to ship by sea from Chennai, too. Sending your sidecar might cost considerably more than a solo bike. I was told to avoid Bangkok seaport, rather send to Pt.Klang.

BTW, I´d love to know, what is the proper paperwork to go to Myanmar?

Thanks for the advices and information. I'd rather try by boat, even if it might be a bit difficult. If anyone has done it, please!!!
Regarding Myanmar, when the authorities are in a good mood, and after having handed in an embassy a many pages description of your trip and waited about three months for the answer, it seems to be possible to get in. Two french couples did it, one with a car, the other with a van...Good luck anyway!!
