My motorcycle has been permanently imported into Thailand and is now registered in the Thai system. I am allowed to ride it here in Thailand. I have a green registration book but I am still waiting for my Thai license plate, which apparently takes some time to receive but does not preclude a properly registered motorcycle from being ridden, as mine is. I went through this entire process with a good amount of skepticism and still have because I still don't have my license plate. Until I do though, I remain cautious of my success.

I did have to obtain an import license from the Thai Department of Foreign Trade under the Ministry of Commerce (NOTE: This is separate organization from Thai Customs.). I then had to take all of the paperwork to Thai Customs and pay duties. The duties were calculated in accordance with the formula on the Thai Customs website: Customs English.

The paperwork requirements to accomplish this were huge. I found that all of the Thai government officials that I met were helpful. I also paid no "tea money." Everyone I dealt with was professional and honest. I will add that the many many people I dealt with were not all that familiar with an individual permanently importing a motorcycle. That is understandable because it just doesn't happen that often for the respective Thai officials to be very experienced in the process.
