Customs/clearing agent in Mumbai, India.
 

Hello,

I am planning on shipping by sea to Mumbai India. I've found a number of shipping agents in the UK but they don't have an agent in India to unload and clear the container through customs.

I've done a search on here and there a mix of horror stories and a few recommendations, but the posts are quite old and I'm concerned things may have changed.

Does any know of a reliable agent in Mumbai that can unload and clear the container and then load it for return shipping?

I shipped out of Chennai by air five years ago. Though that was hard work – haven´t shipped by sea into Mumbai, and frankly, I would not want to try that! Indian bureaucracy is, hmmmmm.... quite interesting test of your nerves, add to that the issues with seaports, and also a city the size of Mumbai, and I´d really do something else instead. By air it might be a tiny bit more straightforward, but I still would not expect it to be a breeze.

Had my bike air freighted from Kenya to India/Mumbai In November 2009 and with the help of a clearing agent, it took me a week to get the bike outta airport customs (can't find this agent details, sorry).
Definitely get an agent to do this, Indian customs and paperwork can be baffling.
As mentioned above, I would think twice before using sea fright to India- men, that port will take a long time to clear out of, maybe a month or so...
And expensive. The port also charge you for "storage" while you are running
around to death, trying to clear the bike out.
Back then, Indian customs wanted a the AA to fax them authentication of my Carnet, that alone took 5 days..

The problem is we've got 3 weeks to sort out getting the vehicle released from customs and then drive to Nepal, to work in a hospital. I was hoping we could ship it nice and early and have an agent clear and store it for us. I've been to India a couple of times and, despite being one of my favourite places, it's a country where everyone says they can do anything and sorting the wheat from the chaff is tricky.

What exactly did you have to do to clear it through customs and why did it take so long, is it just that they clear stuff in chronological-ish order?

For current information and support for paperwork,safe place and address is biker friend Vijay in New Delhi.. Currently my club friends did all in India with his kind supports last october..
Also dont forget to get his advices for riding in India if this will be your first trip there.

GREAT FRIENDS...They have done great works for my club friends since last 4-5 years.This is our experience with them and always appreciated.

You must be very patient and will be lucky if bike is out within 2-3 days after so many paperwork and waitings at the Indian customs.Local people are great but nothing works regularly with the official works..
