custom clearance at Buenos Aires

Hi, Is it true that in Buenos Aires, sea freight custom clearance is very difficulty and time consuming as compared to air cargo clearance. Anyone has experience in custom clearance at the sea port? thanks.

Sea Freight is ALWAYS MUCH HARDER than air, EVERYWHERE. And despite the apparently cheaper costs, by the time it's all done, it might not be.
Olaf does a good service if you want to sea freight and yes Valparaiso should be much better than BA.

Risky move there Grant, making blanket assertions in capital letters on the internet, where countless readers are waiting to pounce. I’ve shipped by container only once, by air a bunch of times (and twice on the Stahlratte, a special case). My container shipment, handled by Stefan Knopf, was 50% cheaper, less effort on the receiving end, and although much slower it did arrive on schedule.

That rules out “always,” though it’s pretty clear that it’s a rare case in the general scheme of things. Of course, all my experience was pre-COVID, and of course YMMV.

We flew our bikes back in April from Buenos Aires, some friends chose the cheaper option of ship transport.
They were charged extra fees making it only a few hundred pounds cheaper but, having been quoted 6 weeks, they had to wait 3 months for their bikes and then pick them up from Hamburg.

Post Covid, things are very different.

I can’t comment on going the other way as we flew into Canada.

Don't know much about Valparaiso, Chile but I have heard unexpected port fees and delays are common Sea Freight problems in Buenos Aires.
Let me explain, the city of Buenos Aires was originally financed/built by the import/export revenue of its' port. Before Argentina gained independence from Spain, this "illegal" port was established in Buenos Aires. Today, the Port of Buenos Aires still operates fairly independently from local authority. Any recourse for reporting additional port fees or late shipments falls upon the shipping companies, who really don't want to rock the boat with the Port of Buenos Aires.

For twenty years I have known Javier and Sandra of Dakar Motos, Buenos Aires. Dakar Motos provides excellent Air Freight service. If shipping a motorcycle in or out of Buenos Aires, I agree with Grant. But, I also have respect for the opinions of Markharf who I have followed on HU for almost as long.
