Buying a second hand bike in Sydney and tour with it?
 

Hey guys,
I am heading to the land of OZ at the end of Nov for about 2 months, i was thinking of buying a second hand bike, a decent but not very fussy one, and head to explore roads leading to nowhere in particular. anyone has been travelling in the whereabouts and needs to sell? or anyone already done and knows what price range i should excpect for a decent bike? also what distance and places i should excpect to do/visit since i only have two months, afterwhich i head for another 1 month in thailand. Any reply are aprreciated

I've been wondering the same. Right now I'm planning on shipping my bike down there, will be riding around Oz in January. Have you considered renting? I've heard about places with a buy-back program specifically for people that want to ride around Oz. Haven't stumbled across any on the web yet though...

You'd want to buy in Sydney/Melbourne .. and it is easier to sell near to where you bought it .. rather than in another state.

Yes i have considered renting since i have only 2months in OZ, but i guess the expense for renting a bike for 2 months would be a bit high? well maybe renting a bike wouldnt be such a bad idea after all, since my budget for a bike is $2000 and i ve been told here on the HUBB that i should not excpect to find many bikes in that price range (budget too low). No i have not heard about the buy back program, maybe someone can illuminate us :)

Buying and selling vehicles can be a bit confusing in Oz - different States = different rules. Depending on where you arrive and intend leaving from depends on the laws that will apply. Selling the bike in a different State can be a bit of a drama unless you sell it without registration - but at a lower price.

Do a weblookup on the RTA NSW, Vicroads and QLD Transport who all have information about buying and selling vehicles.

Things to be aware of;

NSW requires an annual roadworthy test which has to be valid at time of sale and is valid for longer than you will own the bike for if you want to avoid the hassles of getting a new test done.

VIC and QLD require a roadworthy test to be completed before the vehicle is offered for sale, or has to sold unregistered.

To buy and register a bike you will have to provide an address in the State you buy the vehicle, plus prove who you are with a 100 points of identity. This can be painful if the admin clerk is snotty and insists on utility bills, etc.

Compulsory third party insurance (paid at time of registration) only covers injuries that you cause to others, it does not cover you if you are the cause on an accident. Make sure your holiday insurance covers motorbike injuries.

Make the assumption that if you want to sell the bike quickly at the end of the trip it will have to be a real bargain, otherwise you'll end up with a bike in Oz whilst on hoilday in Thailand. Work out what you can afford to lose on the sale - if you buy a bike for $2000, expect to sell it for less than $1000.

Buyback schemes tend to apply to new bikes and you lose big $$$ on the buyback price.

Wow that surely seems a bit of a hassle, i thought of it a bit easier i must say. Well the positive thing about it is that i have some friends in OZ that will still be there after i leave, so they might be able to sell it for me if i do not manage it myself before i head to thai. I am arriving in Melbourne and leaving from Sydney, so i guess i will have to either leave the bike with my mates in melbourne before i head to sydney by greyhound or something and hope they ll sell it for a decent price. Does someone know if Motorcycle long term rental (2 months) is more worth it then buyingsince i am not stayiong for long in OZ ?

Since you already have a mate there & If he/she is a biker...
let them buy the bike for you. (try bike auction) Therefore once you reached OZ you are ready to roll! :scooter: (Im pretty sure renting is more expensive) then when its time to leave just ask your buddys to sell it for you (if possible buy the bike under their name) that way its a lot easier! Depending how "close" you are with them. :cool4:

why not buy & ride all the way to Darwin! :funmeteryes: From there book the ferry for your bike & you fly to East Timor. From there do some riding & island hopping till you reach either Singapore or Malaysia, from there ride all the way to Thailand!
(this all depending on you budget too $$$$:( )
