Australian Registered Bike in America

How long can I leave my Australian registered bike in America. If its under 12 months, what can I do to keep it their say two years?. As Ill be flying back and forwards doing trips around the US and later head down south. I realise I don't need a carnet for the US. I have tried searching this site for the info.

Just starting my adventure and its my first post.

Looks like I require EPA form 3520-1.
Still working on what happens after 12 months.

Contact the American embassy ... they may not 'know' straight way ... you may need to import it.. $$$. Could be cheaper to send your bike back and buy an American bike. May be .. 'wreck' your bike (separate it into parts) leave them there .. and when you get back .. obtain these parts to make a complete bike... rules ... :rain:

My carnet needs to be extended in April I hope to be in Iran with a QLD bike
I hope you have a qld bike not like navalarchitect because to extend the carnet you bike needs a valid australian rego which if a NSW bike cant be done without an inspection and safety cert. Qld bikes dont need to be safety inspected every 12 months.
Extending a carnet is a mission its like getting a new carnet from the country you happen to be in at the same time can take 20 or so days toing and froing

Import your bike in the USA

Hi Bundy54,
Looking for the same thing but from Belgium to USA...temporary import in the USA for nonresidents is for max 1 year and you have to file for the EPA Form 3520-1 BEFORE shipping.Keep in mind the bike has to be exported (or destroyed) "or after one year or upon the nonresident departing the USA whichever comes first"...make sure you have a B1/B2-visa before you go !With the waiver program (no visum/with ESTA) you only are allowed to stay for 90 days...and have to export your bike.I contacted the embassy and they were clear on that.Import and register the bike is some thing very confussing in my eyes,or the manufacturer has to legalize your bike (if they import that model in the USA themselves) or you have to go by a approved ICI agent, but that seems to be very complex/exspensive...the best way I think is riding your bike from Canada or Mexico..strange enough you don't need to file a EPA form when you enter the USA by road !! It's only when you ship it by ship or plane ;-) May be some professional shippers could tell us more ??
The best and have a good ride,Thomas

The NSW people will accept an inspection/safety cert. from an overseas authority .. So it can be done. Just much more tedious and probably costly. But with a name of Bundy and location Maroochydore .. where do you think he is?

For the USA it may be best to buy and sell there.

Aussie Registered Bike in the USA

Hi Bundy54,

From our experience if you fly your bike into the USA you are given an EPA Form 3520-1 and only have a max 1 year then the bike has to leave the country. If you fly to Canada or Mexico and cross a land border there is no time limit.

We rode from South America and crossed from Mexico to USA Sept 2010 and the bike is still in the USA. Over the last 4 years we have crossed the borders to Canada and Mexico a number of times and had no problems.
