Aus > USA Shipping - 5-6wk duration

Looking at doing a 5 week ride in USA following a week in Vegas. So, starting on the West Coast

Was initially thinking of buying and selling but then thought of the time I'd lose in registration/buying/selling and then the monetary loss in selling the bike on short notice.

Got quoted $3500USD for rental for 5 weeks so started thinking about sending my own bike over from Sydney, Aus....if the cost is about the same.

However, am I being too optimistic to try and get it shipped/flown in and out on such a tight schedule?

Forgot to mention...would obviously need to put it back on a plane/shipment before I fly back home too..

Buy and sell !

$3,500 in hire costs plus insurance? A minimum of $4,000 to fly or ship the bike both ways is a considerable amount of oxford scholars! I bought and sold last year in the US and Europe, the R1150GS in Europe sold within 48 Hrs. The KTM 950 Adventure S in the US sold within a week, much quicker had I advertised it sooner and not held out on the price ;-) Search for and sell the bike here.

Being an Ozi resident I thought I might run into a hurdle or 2 but as it turned out I got the KTM registered and plated in Arizona for 12 months for under $100 at a registration agency in under 15 minutes flat using a friends address ;-) Advertise the bought bike for sale the day you buy it, provided you get something in good nick and resalable you shouldn't have a problem and save yourself a bucket load of cash in the process ;-)

Thanks for the reply Drwinite.

Agreed, both the costs are quite high, just trying to explore the best option for a short term trip.

The bike in question I am looking for is a late model GSXR (600/750)

A benefit of having my own bike would mean I don't have to loop back to LA and hence increase my flexibility. Just a bit worried I'll have a bike on my hands hours before my flight!

Btw, the $3500 rental quote was inclusive of insurance

You never know you might find a bargain and somewhere to keep it for future ventures, a BMW GS maybe ?

At least you be able to get off road and put your luggage on it ;-)

I think buying/selling in the US is probably the better option. Shipping your bike back and forward will easily cost you that much, even with seafreight.
