Airfreight NZ to Chile
New Zealand friends want to join us for a trip to Chile etc later on this year on their own bike, but are struggling to find reasonable freighting costs to Santiago - they're being quoted circa $NZ12K return, compared with under GBP4K for us from the UK.
Anyone managed to get a decent price from NZ to Santiago airfreight? |
You've got exactly two options (Air New Zealand and LATAM) on that route, and I'd expect that both of those have no problem filling their holds with commercial cargo, which is why it's expensive. Whereas you've got a much higher volume of flights from the UK.
Your friends should try talking directly to Air NZ Cargo - maybe they'll get a better price than from a freight forwarder, but not necessarily. Also, they should see if Buenos Aires would be meaningfully cheaper. Consider that even for 4k GBP you could easily just buy a bike appropriate for local conditions in Santiago (and not worry about dropping it). |
I don't know if Air NZ or Latam deal direct - lots of airlines won't. Buying a bike is not an option they're interested in - we are three couples and we want/need the comfort of our big Beemers. :mchappy:
Flights are all booked to Santiago, so BA is not an option. Also heard that it is v expensive to get a bike out of there. |
In 2017 we had 2 bikes shipped ex Sydney to Buenos Aires that went via NZ with http://www.ctfreight.com/ for a reasonable price
The start end end destinations are different but it might be worth getting in touch to see if they can help... |
Thanks very much for that, I'll pass on the details.

Looking for the same information . I have had a quote from Jenner’s Cargo $2950nzd to Santiago .
|
Is that seafreight - smallish bike? Seems pretty reasonable to me. I think if the Kiwis could get their costs down to about NZ$8K or thereabouts they would be happy.

Air Frieght, Auckland to Santiago , DR650 , i said it would be about 180kgs , but it seems crate size is more important than weight .
|
Seems like a pretty decent price for air then, even given a DR is a deal lighter/smaller than the GS our friends have. I think they'd be well pleased to get the bike there and back for $8K - I've passed on your comments, hopefully they will get a decent price from Jenners.
