Advice needed
 

My plan 'was' to ship/fly my (old and worth very little)) bike into the USA, spend some time riding around, ending up in Anchorage, and then just leaving the bike and flying home from there.
Unfortunately one of the shipping companies has informed me that if I leave without the bike, I will get fined etc if I leave without it.
The cost of shipping it home (uk) would be a total waste from Anchorage, hence my plan of just leaving it.
Anyone have any ideas how to get round this problem????

There are various charges/taxes to be paid when you import a bike, hence the need for a carnet or a TIP in various parts of the world to get around this. Permenantly import a vehicle and these become due. Pay these and you may be able to leave the bike legally or sell it. However, you may also run into problems with type approval- IIRC it is very difficult to import strokers into the States because of EPA regs for example.

Who knows if they will ever catch up with you, but maybe the next time you're entering the States they may want a word...

2 choices as I see it..

1) Spend the shipping money on a secondhand bike in the US ... and then sell it as you leave for not much money.

2) When you get to Alaska (or where ever) take the bike to a wrecker and ask them if they would take it as a wreck... if they will (and they probably will for bugger all money) go to the customs people and have them agree to have your bike written off as an import of parts .. need to do this well before you leave so best to have it organised when you first hit Alaska, hopefully the parts price you get will equal the customs fees bier ... if not ... well it just fell down the cliff :innocent:
