Zimbabwe insurance

FCO have advised against ALL travel to Zim and therefore most insurance companies won't cover us.

Anyone recomend a co. that will cover us?

jeromedelay 27 Jun 2008 07:12

i believe they will sell you insurance at the border. (for the vehicle)

I was refering to travel insurance.

jeromedelay 27 Jun 2008 08:54

was afraid of that!!!

have you tries thes guys? World Nomads - What's covered

how can an insurance company amend its policy while you are allready on the move because some dictator is stealing elections yet again?

i think unless you are journalists or work for an ngo, and stay way from any potential distuebance, you should not have any problems. just be ready to have all your cameras and computers checked at the numerous police checkpoints .

We are going "home" so we know the situation, however thank you for your concern. Last time (last September) we were there, the police were concerned with diamonds (!), gold and weapons - however I was lucky enough not to be carrying any :)

Even I would advise staying away from Harare (even in times of peace) but that's were our truck is parked and I need to collect it and drive it back to Bulawayo so Police roadblocks are par for the course. The ones we encountered on the outskirts of Bulawayo were mainly concerned with their bellies rather than our political status - in Matabeleland people are still treated with some respect - anyway, we have the basic yellow Zim number plates on the car and that marks us out as locals rather than the screaming red diplomatic ones that mark out potential trouble.

I will have a look at Wild Nomads and see what they can offer - many advice for the tip (have you used them yourself?)

You are in the thick of it especially today...
re insurance, havent tried them no but planning on using them for our transafrica trip starting september. U live in Bulawayo? wish i could swing by but too risky now for people with a press card...

We'll be in Jo'burg at the beginning of August and then we'll be around Bulawayo until month end so, if things have calmed down, pull in for a beer. You should know better than flashing your press card at all and sundry :) - independent journos have never been popular in Zim.

Bundubasher 27 Jun 2008 13:47

Contacted WN - they wont insure you for any countries the FCO advises against travel to. Ho hum...any other ideas?

kentfallen 27 Jun 2008 15:17

I was under the impression you could merely "make it up as you go along"! Like the President does....:mchappy:
