Where can I organise a Carne de Passage?
 

I am currently in Istanbul, and have been reading about my need for a CdP to travel to Iran, Pakistan and India. Can anyone help me with information on where I can get one here in Turkey? Obviously I want to have all paperwork in order. Also, do you need to be fully insured or can you buy insurance at the border for each country? If I need full insurance can anyone suggest where an Australian in Turkey can get it? Thanks for any help
I should add I bought the bike in Austria, with 21 day temporary plates and the only place I could register it was Latvia, after a week of hassles ie "selling" it to a friend I met in Lithuania, him regidtering it in Lithuania, then him "selling" it back to me (no money actually changed hands) then me registering it in Latvia and changing over the name of owner. So I'm an Australian on a Latvian registered bike, in Turkey trying to get a CdP for Iran, Pakistan and India! No wonder I'm confused....but I can lift heavy things!

"In theory" the Carnet should be issued by an official auto club of the country where the vehicle is registered--Latvia.
But it's not clear that Latvia even has an auto assoc authorized to issue a CdP.

As an OZ citizen, I'd suggest you try email/ call one of the Australian auto clubs that is authorized to issue a CdP; start here:

It's also possible that the Turkish Touring Club--the official Turkish auto club that issues CdP for Turkish-registered vehicles--office in Istanbul might be able to give you advice:

just a thought, maybe contact the German Automobile Association (ADAC), I understand they used to issue carnets for foreigners. They didnt, when I asked them about a year ago, but maybe it was because I had the local Automobile Association in my home country to arrange it for me. Hopefully you can convince them, that in your case, it might be hard to get it from elsewhere. Latvia and Australia might naturally also be worth asking.

You might make it into Iran without it (or at least I´ve heard claims this has been done, though not easy!) but for Pakistan & India you´ll surely need it if you want to ride in those countries.

Here is another question... where can a person can a CdP from a non sanctioned office? Know what I mean? :innocent:

Sorry if I misunderstand, but do you mean a "forger" :blushing:?...Well, a CdP is a very long/ complex printed document, but I guess it could be forged. And some countries, e.g. India, Japan, are known to require 'verification' of the original CdP by the issuing country office at time/point-of-entry.
