What to do to get to Anchorage without return ticket to UK

I am planning to travel from London to Anchorage all the way down to Argentina however the USA ask for a return ticket when applying for a visa. I like to know how everyone does.
Thanks

Over the past few years we have tried to buy one-way tickets to Europe or back to the US several times and found that a roundtrip ticket is 2 to 5 times cheaper than a one-way. We just ignored the return half of the ticket. The airline is not going to start a worldwide manhunt just because you didn't use a product you paid for. Or at least they didn't for us. A round-trip ticket is not only cheaper but it solves your problem with the visa people.

I'm curious as to how this works as well, for example when countries specify that they want proof of onward travel, how have people dealt with this situation when they're only purchased a one way ticket? good question, for me I guess i might take the route of a round trip ticket and just not use the return leg. Not sure what other options you have. at least you'd have proof of continuing travel.
