USA and CANADA insurance here

I just spoke with Fernet Insurance of Florida.

They handle overseas riders insurance for USA and an ID card for Canada, if you bring or buy motorcycle in USA, then insurance is valid in Canada - but they do not write for Canada specific.

To qualify you must have a motorcycle endorsement from any country.

They are an agent for Dairyland Insurance, and Progressive Insurance, and have a lot of experience with motorcyclists AND groups coming from overseas.

Here is the rates as "sample"

For short term policy , Dairyland insurance, on either USA or foreign registered motorcycle is =
1-30 day = $100.94,
or up to 59 days is $$140 USD,
both policies can be extended - but the cost is the same for each extension.

For US registered bikes and foreign a 1 year policy with Progressive is =
$123 for the entire year or less, depending on motorcycle size, pay the entire year, when you leave simply cancel the policy and Progressive will refund the balance via check or refund to credit card.
You will need a US address for this one, so that the policy can be mailed to you.

You will need, as I said, a US address... if needed or use mine until I get overwhelmed.

There are a few states that the insurance company can not write to, that is if you import or buy a motorcycle in these states, you cannot obtain insurance. BUT, the insurance DOES cover you in these states - you just can't import or buy in them is all - New York and Georgia.

Here is the linky: Overseas Visitors

It's my understanding that you CAN'T BUY INSURANCE anywhere at USA borders.

I just made several inquiries to American insurance companies by phone (from Norway) today. My case is...23 yo Aussie with 2010 Aussie DR650, USA for 3 weeks then 6 months or more in Canada to work (to set the scene).

First I called Sunrise, to check whether the foreign bike and I were a problem. All good. They cover Canada and USA. Waiting on a detailed quote for pricing.

I then directly called progressive, but they can only insure if your back is registered in the state so it seems...after 30 mins on the phone holding to check all possibilities. Try yourself if you want to check this. Old mate is right about the price (about 123) but wouldn't take the bike without a USA rego.

I then phoned Michael at Fernet Insurance who deals specially with foreign bikers for USA/Canada insurance. The "linky" in old mates post above goes straight to the app form, with pricing. For straight liability it costs $76/59 days but can be renewed at the end. He was very helpful and at this stage is the choice I'm going with.

With motorcycle express, they're a little bit out of my budget, and it takes time to process so may skip them this time. If only I was a little bit more prepared I'd pay the extra perhaps.

more on Fernet

if you are planning to stay longer, you might arm twist them into giving you a Progressive policy for a year at I think 124 USD ??? When you leave, cancel it, theyll refund the money to your credit card
