I had a look around the requirements for the Ukraine, but still have some questions. I'm planning on going to the Crimea - UK > Poland > Ukraine, Crimea > Russia, Moscow, StP > Finland > UK . The EU and Russian requirements are easy to find out but the Ukraine? I think I need...

I need to figure out which border crossings to use for poland/ukraine and ukraine/russia (destination moscow)
I need to understand about customs declarations and the car especially how long the temporary import certificate is valid for (assuming system similar to russia)
I need to understand about getting insurance for the Ukraine.
I need to understand how one might get russian insurance in the Ukraine (I had to buy russian insurance at the border in Finland last year).
Any help gratefully recieved.

Altough I've never been to Ukraine, I googled some information on Polish websites to help you and learn a little before my own trip there.

There is no temporary import document in Ukraine anymore (it used to be). A car or motorcycle is stamped to your passport as a "transportation goods" (abbreviated TZ in Ukrainian). It is cancelled when you leave the country. No deadline (validity) was mentioned for this stamp.

Ukraine is a memeber of a Green Card union(?). A green card of my motorcycle, issued by Allianz in Poland, lists Ukraine as a country where the document is valid. Check with your insurance company.

Regarding a Poland-Ukraine border crossing: if you want to cross Poland relatively quickly, with a possible stop in Wroclaw or Krakow for sightseeing, there is just one option: a border crossing in Korczowa on the E40 road Wroclaw - Krakow - Lviv. I'm not endorsing this border crossing, I've never been there, it is just the quickest and simplest option.

I drove this route last may and there were no major dramas. You get Ukranian insurance at the polish border. I didn't get it but found out as I drove back that I should have had it! likewise russian insurance is available at the border. Cost is worked out on a sliding scale depending on length of stay, size of 'machine' etc. IF your russian isn't too good there are usually girls at the border who will help you in exchange for a few quid. Going west to east was relatively straight forward but coming back from ukraine to Poland took 6 hours, and that was with paying off a guard to jump the queue, A practice I strongly object to, but I'd still be there if I hadn't! I'm not home at the moment but when I am I'll send you details of where I crossed borders. With regard to import declarations, I don't know, it was all dutch to me! but the nice lady atthe border sorted it out for me. I think there might have been but the cost was was reasonable, otherwise I would have remembered it! I'm afraid I don't know how long it would last for if there is a permit. As Iexpect you know if you have travelled in russia before the big thing is getting your proof of accomodation thingy stamped.

Always best to get information from people who have actually been there as there is always a great difference between theory and practice. Yes I would like the extra information moggy1968 . The return trip Ukraine-Poland isn't going to happen. I think Ukraine - Crimea - Sochi - Moscow - StP - Finland better idea as I always have to end up in moscow 'cos that's where the wife's parents live.

I traveled to Ukraine by my motorcycle 2002.
I cross the border from Hungary. It took about 1 hour. We got custom declarations and temporary import certificate for bike. When we got out at same border it took about 5 minutes.
We didn't buy medical insurance and no one ask for it.
