The dust of Afghanistan

Has anyone ever flown their motorbike from Afghanistan to Indai. Pakistan is a complete no go overland now. We have tries every avenue but is still impossible. I now try to fly with money I havent got to get to Dehli. Internet and info is very dificult to get in Herat. If anyone can help or knows of people or companies to get me and my motorbike (my dragonfly) from Afghanistan to Dehli I would be more than greatful. Tomorrow we risk the road to Kabul and cross the Talibans capital. Afghanistan is amazing but some nervous fingers are stuck in contemplation as what to do..... and the Taliban......

Hi

I crossed Afghanistan east to west (Torkham to Islam Qala) last year in my Hilux.

Are you riding a bike through Kandahar?? That's madness, but I'd love to hear about it!

You can ride your bike to India if you have the following:

- a Turkmen transit visa
- a Pakistani visa that allows you to enter by land (i.e. is not marked 'entry by air only')
- a carnet

From Herat, you can ride to Torghundi, then cross the TM border to Serhetabat (Kushka), ride up to Mary, Turkmenabat, Atamurat, then drop down to Imam Nazar and enter Afghanistan at Andlkhoi. I did this in reverse last year. There is a Turkmenistani consulate in Herat (and Mazar, and an Embassy in Kabul) who are pretty friendly. You'll need a double entry Afghan visa.

Andkhoi was probably my favourite place in Afghanistan, from here there is a good, safe (by Afghan standards) road to Kabul. From there you can ride to Torkham (but don't do it at night) and enter Pakistan, if your visa allows.

To take a vehicle into Pakistan or India, you really need a carnet de passages en douane. I think you will need this to fly the bike in anyway.

Pakistani visas issued in Kabul are for entry by air only... try to get one in Tashkent.

All the best!!

Daniel

Just had another thought...

You can strap your bike to a bus and have it driven to Kabul, and fly yourself there. This is no fun, but you are SERIOUSLY risking your life by going through Kandahar IMO - and that's from someone who has driven across the country.

But you're in about the worst place in the world for cheap shipping. If I was you, and you can't get an overland Pak visa, go up into UZ from TM, get a Pak visa then rr-enter AF at Termiz and you're laughing. There is an Uzbek consulate in Mazar, and an embassy in Kabul. Once you have the UZ visa, TM visa will be simple, AFG visas are easy in Tashkent, and I found Tashkent the easiest place anywhere to get a Pak visa, though that was three years ago.

Otherwise, I wish you good luck. Just don't risk your life to go to India... it ain't worth it. Pakistan on the other hand...

Daniel
