The carnet still puzzles me

Hi itchy feet club....
Yes yes I am beginning to realize that I need a carnet for asia. My question is, I want to import my vehicle (legally and perminantly) into NZ at the end of the trip. Do I get my deposit back from ADAC in this case? It`s a lot of money... And on that subject, can I somehow get one get on the cheap, but still stay out of jail? I read something about monthly payment non refundable system but can`t find it again. The whole dilema is more expense, longer before we can head off...
This website is a gem by the way...
Cheers
Mark

Hi Mark,

If you import your bike (legaly) in NZ you will get your deposit back.
The idea is: You leave the previous country so the carnet is "stamped out", You don't enter NZ on your carnet (you import different) so the carnet is complete and can be send back to the isueing office for a refund.

As far as I know ADAC is the cheapest carnet.

Good luck

Maarten

Thanks Maarten, exactly what I wanted to know. I will contact ADAC myself to find out more of the cost involved, I gather I need a list of countries I intend to visit? I am still trying to figure out an 'ideal' route. And infact whether I would be better off taking a car. I haven't got a lot of experience on on-road biking, I just want the independance and love overland.. Cheers,
Mark

Hi Mark

Yes, you will need to advise the carnet issuing agency which countries you intend to visit. They calculate the carnet value based on your bike's value and the highest duty rate of any country on your list.

You can also give them a tentative route, then see whether any of those countries has too high a duty rate, and whether you can bypass them to save costs.

For the 'Why a Motorcycle?', our opinion can be found at:

Not mentioned on that list is the fact that a carnet for a car will be hugely more expensive than for a bike!

Hi, if you can, would you mind answering my carnet question as well. So if I get a truck and carnet in UK and at the end of my trip sell it in South Africa, while having brought it in without using the carnet, then I can still get my money back from the (is it the ) ADAC?

mark vandermeer 30 May 2002 19:31

Hi California,,,,
If you get the truck in the uk you would be able to get a carnet there but they are very expensive and stupidly expensive if you have a truck worth a lot of money. The ADAC is the german auto club and apparently cheap'er', and possible to get for uk vehicles. I don't know what the UK charges but here in Germany it depends what countries you visit. For me they want 120% of the cars value( thanks to Iran). You can get the carnet money back as long as the car was stamped out of the last country .In your case the one before you reached South Africa. Importing the car permantly to South Africa (ie. to sell) you'll have to pay importation charges and not use the carnet to get in... I'd buy a right hand drive if you intend to do that.
I'd say you've got a fun trip coming up...
cheers

In the same predicament (bringing bike into NZ). How have you got on? Am a little confused with the idea of "stamping out" the carnet, can't see how you can get the money back without the UK returns customs stamp.

Marcel

ps - anyone have a web contact for ADAC? Cheers

Please see my response to your question 'one way trip advise please'

Unfortunately, ADAC is no longer issuing carnets for non-Germans:

"we no longer issue the carnet de passages for people living outside Germany and for vehicles not registered in Germany. There were too many problems with customs formalities and refunding the guarantee."

ADAC's website is in German only, but since you now have to be a German resident weith a German registered bike that's not likely to be a problem.

I'm afraid RAC is your only option for carnets if you are a UK resident with a UK registered vehicle.

I cannot speak for the UK. But if you have a carnet issued by the Canadian Automobile Association, they want to see a stamp from customs at a Canadian border proving that the vehicle is back in Canada, before they give you your refund.

In theory, if you have paid all appropriate duties and taxes in New Zealand, you can submit the receipts to your automobile association and get the carnet deposit refunded. I personally would triple check this with the association before leaving.
