Temporary Insurace Canada - USA - Mexico (2 weeks)
 

What have you riders done about insuring your bike for your North American part of the journey. I will be riding from Canada to Argentina and Im wondering what the cheapest method of insuring your bike from Canada to Mexican boarder is. I would like to get to Mexico asap so I'd be looking for insurance for 2 weeks approximately.

I live in Canada 10mins from the US boarder so even just US coverage would be alright.

Ive called insurance companies and most wont do it and the ones who will charge almost a full year rate.

Is there some company out there I don't know about who does this on the cheap or cheaper?

If you're insured in Canada, you're insured in the USA. If you're not insured in Canada, you have a problem just riding to the border.

Do a search for a recent thread in which US insurance is discussed for several pages.

Generally you need to insure the bike for the shortest term you can get, then cancel once you cross into Mexico. HOWEVER - be sure that doesn't cancel your legal registration, as that CAN invalidate your Mexican insurance in an incident! Most travellers ignore that, BUT if you have an accident, and there is any doubt of the validity of your road legalness, Mexican jails truly suck, and that's where you'll be until they decide what to do with / fine / jail you.

Generally you will need to insure the bike as normal for the minimum term you can get, then cancel it.

However, and this is where it gets tricky, this CAN and generally DOES invalidate your "road-legal-ness". So in theory, a Mexican/?? company that doesn't want to pay out and looks closely COULD refuse legally, so you'd be on the hook, AND in deep doo-doo for riding illegally without insurance!

That same problem will/could exist for the whole central and south American sections as well. Not registered back home means driving without the "protections" of the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic, which means suspect protection from the several lots of mandatory liability insurances you are obliged to get.

As xFiltrate would say - choose your prison carefully because most suck.

As mentioned, if you have Canadian insurance it covers you in the US.

In my experience, you must supply the name and policy number of your current insurer when you purchase Mexican Border insurance. (which I have always done on line in advance) I am pretty certain that they require you to keep it valid. www.bajabound.com

The other issue, at least in the state where I live, is that the insurance company must notify the DMV when an insurance policy lapses, and the state then cancels the registration. I keep my bikes stored in the EU on my US insurance policy to keep the vehicle registration valid.

I'd appreciate some additional direction on all this if OK. We will be travelling from Central in to Mexico and then one month in North America before shipping the bike back to Aust.

Do we need to have insurance organised prior to entering the States as we have heard that we wont be able to cross into unless we have it prior.
