Temporary import registration for South America

Hi,
My wife and I will be flying into Santiago, Chile from Australia in Sptember 06 on our Australian registered BMW 1150GS Adventure. We will travel through Peru, Bolivia & Argentina over a 5 month period, with no more than 6 weeks in any one country.
We will use Qantas/Lan Chile to fly the bike, but will not have a forwarding agent. The paperwork we will have include:
1. Dangerous Goods Certificate through DGM (Dangerous Goods Management) in Brisbane.
2. Bike registration papers (Australian)
3. International Drivers Permit (& Passport)
4. We plan to (probably) get third party insurance at each country along the way.
We won't have a carnet
I have heard there is a need to get a "temporario importation del vehiculo" (ie vehile temporary import paperwork).
Can anyone confirm this?
If so, where do I get it in Santiago?
Is it only required for Chile or other countries?
Also, for the return to Australia, we will have to get a DG Certificate. Has anyone got any recommendations on where to get this in Santiago?
Cheers,
Cords & Aash

Sounds like you're all sorted out.

You dont need a carnet in S.America, the customs people like it as it makes their job easier but its a lot of money to fork out.

If you're not travelling with a carnet then a temporary import document is issued by Customs (Aduana) when you enter a country & you hand it back when you leave. Adds up to half an hour to a border crossing while they sort that out but its no big deal.

Every country here has an equivalent thing for temporary import, except for Brazil where they could'nt work out what they wanted so just sent me on my way.

I dont know where you'd get the dangerous goods certificate to ship the bike back, presume that'd be handled by the people you choose to send it with.
