"Temporary" carnet du passage for Iran
 

I wish I could provide some info about this but, sorry, it's a question. (I've searched for answers but find I need to post.)

I'm in Germany, want to get my Land Rover to Oman, where it's registered. Via Iran is the only feasible route I'm aware of (other than shipping).

I came through Iran on the way to Europe but my carnet du passage expired on 02 May 2012. Getting an extension, or a new one, could well be tricky. (Even trying get a reply to an Email sent to the Oman AA is an art form in itself.)

What is the likelihood of being able to arrange "temporary import" at an Iranian border? I read things like "sometimes possible", "has been done" and so one. What does a "yes" or a "no" depend on? If I'm at the border and it's a "no" day, I can't just try the next street along.

Thanks for your reply. You are more concerned about my problem than the Oman Automobile Association, who choose to ignore my Emails. (Hopeless ***** ** *******. I lived there for eight years; have some insight into the matter.)

I've been to the website and had a look round. Under "Recaf Automobile and Things", for example, there's no info. Where exactly should I be looking? Thanks.

Carnet definitely needed for Iran.
I have tried to find out they have a deposit scheme like Egypt,but no definitive answer on this question.
I wish to ride through Iran and the RAC no longer do carnets apparently.
If you get no joy.
Just say "**** it" and turn up at the border with all the paper work you have and see what happens.

In all seriousness, I think your last line is very good advice: just turn up!

I was in touch with Stantours, who on various occasions in the past have provided me with good service. They offered a "guide": the cost seemed enormous (hundreds of some hard currency). I said "no thanks, I wouldn't want to go through Iran with a guide", but I'd misunderstood. The "guide" would get me through the border, only (then disappear).

I've been through Iran twice: in 2004, on buses etc. and in 2011 with my Land Rover. I've found the Iranians -all the ones I met- to be courteous, very generous and so on. When I exited last time, to Iran, my experience with the border people was excellent and heart-warming. It might well be that at a border, a "special service"/"special payment" and a sincere (i.e. to be kept) promise to say nothing to anyone about it would get one in. There'd be the matter of getting out, of course, which in my case would be from Bandar Abbas, on a ferry.

So I googled 'temporary admission to Iran with a car'
And it came up with a horizons unlimited page datedJanuary 2013 and it seems.possible to enter Iran with the deposit schem,how much I do not know,but Egypt I think run a maximum of €2000 age dependant.
I'm interested in knowing how you get on.
I want to ride Iran to Turkmenistan on a motorbike so any sort of solid answer would be
appreciated.

I am also planning to pass through Iran coming from Turkmenistan and am curious if it can be done without a carnet. Please, if anyone finds out anything more on this please do share. Thank you.
