Temp Import Permission to South Africa, NO Carnet

Hi all,

Bit of a newbee.Cant find an exact answer to my question.

I am not leaving till Aug. London to Johannesburg by 125 , for our wounded servicemen.

Hundreds of mostly enjoyable research later.

Namibia into South Africa. Uk bike and a British Citizen. Can i sort a TIP at the border ?

No way i can afford a Carnet de Passage.

If so does anyone knowthe costs ? And docs required.?

The bike will be exported after a well earnt break in SA.

Many thanks in advance.

Will

Try the AA of South Africa.
They will be best to advise you:thumbup1:

South Africa is part of the 'Southern African Customs Union' - SACU - which covers Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho, S.Africa and Swaziland.
So, if you've found a way of taking your bike into Namibia without a carnet, you'll be within the SACU. You shouldn't need any more papers for your bike to travel around inside it, including S. Arica.

Have a look at this, post #1

A TIP to enter Namibia then just waved through into S.Africa. That's what happened to me on that border, although I had a carnet to enter Namibia.

But maybe take the good advice above, check with the South African AA as well.

West coast Africa. Cant afford a CDP. Can i TIP into SA from Namibia?

Cheers for the posts. Having spoke to Rachel at RAC. Paul is gone now.A CDP for my bike is £757. With £456 being returned when the bike and Carnet are back in the Uk. So, at £301 net, a CDP is the way to go.
But i am suuuuch a shoe string here. Thankfully I have managed to organsie a number of sponsors. That have helped out with some of the costings.

As well as the carnet you will need to purchase a cross border permit for travel on the Namibian roads. It costs around 200 N$ and can be purchased at the border. You will also have to purchase a similar document at Botswana borders. These are compulsary road usage/3rd party insurance. In South Africa these costs are covered in fuel charges. In both Nam & Bots there are regular road blocks where these documents are checked along with driver's licence and on the spot fines are issued if they are not available.

Namibia-Zambia-Botswana-South Africa I did without carnet sep-2012

no need for Carnet in Africa,It work for me in 2012
Im in Israel now,I cross 22countrys from Maroco - Cape town-Cario riding Us register bike.
with out Carnet,I took advise from Mrwhite.
When, you coming to Egypt from Sudan ask for TIP(temporary importation papers) and pay $800 Refundable-Deposit which I got back to the penny when I left Egypt to Israel, lost $70 when I exchange from Egypt money to Us$,make sure you exchange on Egypt side NOT Israel.
Canada carnet that you need if you live in USA,cost $750 non refundable
+ other horseshit. and Kenya border, easy dont stop at customs and just ride using the other gate like 25,000 miles with Luke and Nick Did Or pay $20usd for TIP.

Thank you Mrwhite,Luke and Nick.bier

Do I really need a Carnet for Southern Africa

Hi,

Having travelled through East and Southern Africa in 2005 on a Carnet I now wish to plan another trip but this time only to Southern Africa. However, I need to know can it be done without a carnet? I intend to ship my vehicle (battered old landrover) to either Durban or Walvis bay and do a tour of South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawai and Mozambique. Because my vehicle is cheap it will not be worth shipping back to Ireland I intend to sell it when my trip is over. Can I do it without a carnet and which countries will allow me to import it to sell?

Thanks R
