Syria is possible without a carnet!

I know there have been a few threads on this recently, but thought I would give a quick update.

We entered into Syria from Turkey on 29 Mar 2009 with an Oz registered 4x4 with NO CARNET. It cost us US$ 78 for a temp permit/carnet, US$52 for 30 days insurance and US$ 100 for diesel tax (it is US$ 100 per week for the diesel tax)

Read here for our experience in more detail.

Cheers

Hi Pumba

Thank for sharing this.

I am about to start a little ride going east. I will be in Turkey in two weeks time but I will have no time to apply for the syrian visa before I go. However, I would like to try to go to the syrian boarder. What do you think ? Do you know whether it is possible to get a visa at the boarder ?
I have my own carnet but do you know what are the other fees that I might have to pay ?

Many thanks,

Alex

Hi there

We entered Syrian on a UK passport. We got our visas in London. We met a Dutch guy who got his visa at the border. I think however that they issue visas at the borders to citizens of countires who do not have Syrian consulate. Not sure if this is true or not...sorry

There were no other major costs besides from the ones I listed. I think there was Syrian pound 100 for a small piece of paper - not sure what it was for though.

Is a temp permit/carnet required for Syria?

The diesel tax suprises me, I didn't hear about this before, is there a petrol tax?

Thanks.

If you don't have a proper carnet, issued by your country, then you need the temporary import permit (or called temporary carnet, issued by the customs officers) which is US$78.

There is no petrol tax. Only a diesel tax.

Hi Alex,

I'm on the way to syria and do not have a visa yet.
Today I tried to enter syria at the border at Yayladagi which is close to the mediteranean see but was refused.
I have german nationality and they told me I need to go back to Ankara to the embassy or will get it in Berlin.

So please let me know about your expirience. Maybe there is a possibility to get it at an other crossing.
