swiss reg bike in EU to be ridden by UK citizen back home
 

Hi everybody, I'm new here so greetings to all from Wales, a small country to teh west of England in the UK.

I want to buy a bike from Belgium (a cz 175) which is on Swiss plates at present. I had hoped I could just take a train to Belgium and ride it back to the ferry where I could pick it up with a trailer and do all the UK paperwork at my leisure. Anybody any idea how I could do this legally? I can insure it on the VIN number I think but I guess this is not enough to allow me to ride it through Belgium and France. I can't see a UK citizen being allowed to ride a non EU registered bike on Swiss plates that don't relate back to me. Due to my work I cannot afford to just risk it for the two hours it would taker to ide it to the port, as if I get prosecuted I'll loose my job.

The other way might be to see if I can get it onto a either a goods train or the goods carriage of a passenger train. does this seem viable? The bike is only worth a few hundred pounds and it just isn't worth crateing it up and shipping it as it would cost more than the bike is worth.

There's nothing illegal about riding a foreign registered vehicle through Belgium, France and the UK as long as you have insurance. Even if you don't have the paperwork, you're unlikely to get into any trouble from the cops unless the bike has been reported stolen.

My advice is to go to Belgium and ride the damn thing back to Wales. Probably the most important thing legally is that you have proper insurance.
