South American Registration Document Check?

Hi everyone

Question here for those who have done South American trips...

I am currently preparing 2 DR650's in Sydney for a trip with my Italian mate from Buenos Aires > TDF > Cartagena starting in December.

Bike Shop tells me impossible to register a bike in his name in NSW Australia without him being physically here (??)

If I register both bikes in my name in Australia, can anyone foresee any problems at South American border crossings? Has anyone ridden on a bike not registered in their name? we will be riding together and have all other relevant paperwork - I just wonder if this is something that gives over zealous customs officials something to latch on to.

Thanks in advace for your thoughts and experiences

Argentina

At the border of Argentina (the bridge) coming from Foz do Iguacu, Brazil (less than 1 year ago), the Argentinian customs people would not let us cross as the bikes we were "renting" (borrowed from friends, but written up as a rent contract) were not in our names. I think it was because THEY HAD JUST LOST THE "COPA AMERICA" TO BRAZIL 2 DAYS BEFORE !! :nono:

Of course the owners were not with us, so that may not be an issue in your case as long as you guys don't split up.... :mchappy:

In Uruguay get a "Carta Poder" drawn up transferring rights and responsibilities from the registered keeper to the rider. This will suffice, (with title), crossing into any Latin American country other than Argentina - not saying it won´t do, just never done it!

I have the name and address of a sympathetic Notario in Montevideo should you need it.

YES, the more stamps, signatures and water seals - THE BETTER. :thumbup1::thumbup1::thumbup1::thumbup1::thumbup1:
Oh, and on fancy "official" document paper too!!!! :D

Thanks contributors

Hi folks - thanks for all the suggestions you have made. I thought it would be OK, but always best to get wisdom from those who have done! The wall of paperwork approach I particularly enjoy - thanks for the tip :thumbup1:
