South African vs British passport

Does anybody (probably South African) know whether it would be cheaper or easier to travel through Africa with a British or a South African Passport from a Visa cost and "red-tape" perspective?

Hi Bevan

We carried two passports (neither of them British or South African, though) when travelling - Canadian and Australian. One was always kept buried, but if we had needed it we could have used it.

I suggest you write to the embassies of the individual countries and ask them for their list of countries whose citizens require visas to visit their country. If they want you to tell them which country you're from, say you're South African but your travelling companion is British.

Hope this helps a little.

Good Idea
Thanks

If any South Africans are interseted I found a great site that answers almost all my questions about visas. Some of them might be a bit dated though. (2000/2001)
As you know things can change radically in a couple of months in africa. But they also give all the contact details.

From my experience ( of taking up to 3 passports , one a RSA pport with me ) I would say take them both/all .

Also , for some crossings in Southern Africa you may be able to use South African ID book instead , such as Lesotho .

Hi
I've travelled across Africa with both SA and Brit Passports and in my experience SA passport is best for Africa, you have to pay for a lot less visa's. One thing if you are trying to get a Sudan visa in Ethiopia you might need a letter from the SA embassy and that applies to everyone no matter what passport.

Cheers
Cuan

P.S Last trip was done was in 2000.

Cheers
