Shipping to Chile/Carnet

Hi

I am planning on shipping my bike from NY to Chile or Buenos Aires. Was wondering if it is easy to take possession of the bike in these places if the bike is transported by air. Do I need a carnet to get the bike out of the airport at these places?

Also, I need to come back to the States for a wedding midway through the trip. Will it be possible for me to fly out of the country, probably Peru/Ecuador/Central America, without the bike and return to continue the trip?

Responses will be appreciated.

Hi Ash, and welcome to the HUBB!

If you are financially able to get a carnet, we recommend you do so. It will save a fair amount of hassle at airports and border crossings. It is not, strictly speaking required, but if you don't have one, each country has its own procedures and paperwork for temporary importation of vehicles. Fees are usually involved.

It is important to note, however, that in Central America only, the carnet is NOT used. Instead, your passport will be stamped with the vehicle details so that you cannot leave the country without the vehicle.

So, my best advice is to get the carnet. With it, you will be able to leave the bike in South America while you fly back to the US and return. But you will NOT be able to easily leave the bike in Central America, so plan accordingly.

Explanation of the carnet can be found at the following link:

Carnets for North Americans can be obtained from the CAA, who are very helpful.

Good luck, and let us know how you go!

as you say, no need for a Carnet in Chile.
Chile is in South America the best place anyway, by far!!, to ship your bike to.Easy fast and correct handling.
Costs in Chile are minimal. Depending from shipping company to shipping company the costs are from 0,00 to max (what I have heard so far)US30,=
I know this from Iquique (=best) and San Antonio. Maybe other chilean ports might higher have port/dock/handling charges, I don't know.
