Is it possible to get insurane for less then 1 year at the border.
I read another post that said insurance is 85 euros for a year.
thanks

That information might well have come from me. I bought mandatory insurance for a very minimal period (three days? a week?) at the Serbian border and it cost me something like 85 euros--by far the most expensive of my trip, even including Morocco. Serbians are pissed off about Nato's military intervention, and they're pissed off about the judicial proceedings against perpetrators of genocide, and they're pissed off that they can't join Nato.....and some of that resentment is probably focussed on solo motorcycle travelers from Nato countries or elsewhere.

If there's another option, I'd advise taking it, but Serbia's definitely worth a visit.

Hope that helps.

Hi,

I think I've posted EUR85 for Serbia before too but that figure is for Green Card insurance (ie. third party) and is mandatory. btw I didn't go through Serbia in the end so the number is hearsay on my part (although Mark says he paid EUR85).

They're a bit old school and they really do want to see a piece of green card with their country initials checked.

Some Swiss guys had full Balkan green card cover -- something you'd be lucky to get off a UK insurer. I was quite impressed Bennetts cover the whole of the European Union (ie. Romania, Bulgaria etc.) even though I had to look up who was in the EU myself.

FWIW: September 2009 green card prices (on the border for 3wks to 3 mnths depending on country):

Macedonia EUR50
Kosovo EUR20
Serbia EUR85
Montenegro EUR13
Croatia - I think it should have been EUR20 but I was waved through!

Cheers,

Ian

Sounds about right to me. I also paid about 30 euros for Bosnia-Herzgovina, paid nothing whatsoever for Montenegro or Kosovo (entering at a crossing from Serbia which was controlled by UN troops disinterested in petty matters like insurance). I think I paid once for Croatia out of two or three crossings, but memory fails me. Albania suggested that I purchase insurance at the next opportunity....by which time I seem to have quote forgotten unquote. No one in Ukraine could figure out how to sell me anything (US registration), although it did seem to be "required." Moldova and Turkey were nominal amounts, and Romania and Bulgaria were covered by my German green card. Serbia and Macedonia were the big ones, with Bosnia a distant third.

"...at one Bosnia-Serbia border crossing, June '10, 60 Euros for minimum one-month coverage"

but that's for a non-EU registered bike.
