Selling a bike )with a carnet) in Africa...
 

Hello all,

Can anyone advise me on the implications of selling a bike in Nairobi or Dar?

I wil be travelling on a South African Carnet which requires a very small deposit which i can afford to lose, but are there other implications i should be considering? Basically im planning to do Cape to Cairo and back to Kenya to sell the bike and save the shipping costs back home. Also what are the chances of finding a buyer (XT600)?

Also, i cant get into Egypt on a South African issued Carnet... do i have another option other that a hefty deposit at the border? What are the chances of finding a safe place in Sudan to leave the bike for a few weeks and continue by bus?

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Jim,
you won't have any problem finding a place to store your bike in Sudan,
In fact, I would suggest riding it all the way to Wadi Halfa and leavingit there before catching the ferry.
Why do you want t o sell your bike in Kenya?
Why don't you just ride it home, it won't take you long and it'll save you the beauraucratic hassle.
If not, I don't believe you'll have any problem finding a buyer for it in either Ethiopia, Kenya or Uganda.
