Registration Of Imported Bike Austrlia
 

Hello, I will soon be returning home with my UK registered XT600. I will be importing the bike though Darwin and need to know what I do for registration as I live in QLD and do not want to register the bike in NT. Anyone had this problem? Can you get temp rego to ride back to QLD? Or do you just ride with UK plates show the cops the Carnet if they give you any grief? Any ideas apprecited.

You are aware that if you want to permeant import the bike you need clearance from DOTARS?

A carnet simply guarantees that the bike will leave the country... so using it to permanently bring the bike in is a no no...

You can register the bike in the NT, move to QLD and cancel the NT rego when to get QLD rego... just like anyone else who moves interstate..

Yeah Ta Frank the my vehicle import doco should have arrived by now, applied months ago.... Other people must have had this problem and surely registering in NT and then transferring to Qld can't be the only way. I shoot off an email to Nt rego so will see what they come back with.

I'll be taking my bike to Canberra later this year and I'll have to land and ride it through NSW. I'm hoping there's a way I can ride it from the wharf without the extra cost of freighting it or the hassle of registering in NSW. You've inspired me to ring the ACT Rego crowd on Monday and check it out. I'll report the conversation next week.

Gday, Just received a reply from NT Rego stating that they can offer a 7 day (maximum) relocation of unregistered vehicles. I am pretty sure NSW will be the same. Finally something relating to a government entity is working out ok.................Wow

That's very reasonable of them! I'm not sure I can draw from that that NSW will do likewise. Not sure I've ever heard "NSW Govt" and "reasonable" in the same sentence. Here's hoping....

I'm amazed at the NT govt being so helpful, there's something wrong.

Just out of interest how will you be importing?

DOTARs only allow 2 forms of private import now;
1) You have owned the vehicle for more than 1 year - lots of proof required.
Dupply rego documents, bill of sale, service invoices, even things like tyre invoices or ferrry tickets helps "convince" the koalas of Canberra.
2) The vehicle is more than 15 years old - even more proof required!!

Allow at least 4 weeks to get your request even looked at by DOTARs - their job is to delay and make it as hard as possible to import vehicles privately. They have to be the very worst of the worst of "Yes Minister" style civil servants. I applied in December 2005 and did not receive approval until February 2006, so be aware of long delays and dont ship the bike until you have the import approval.

When you goto register the vehicle it needs to be inspected for Australian design rule compliance by private inspectors (ask QLD Transport for a list). They will issue a plate to rivet onto the bike. Then you'll need a safety certificate, then you can actually cough up for your rego.

Just received a reply from the NSW Road Transit Authority. It reads more complicated than it actually is, and should be a whole lot cheaper than getting the bike to Canberra on the back of a truck. I think Chris is probably right in that all Australian state governments make provisions for transitting bikes.

"Dear Customer

To apply for a RTA unregistered vehicle permit (UVP) you will need to obtain a current Pink Slip (road worthy) for the vehicle. You will need to attend a RTA motor registry with your drivers licence for identification, a receipt for accommodation in NSW, or evidence of a NSW contact address, this may be the address of a friend or relative. Where the address of a friend or relative is provided, a letter from the nominated contact person authorising the use of their address on behalf of the applicant must be provided. The letter must state the name of the applicant and the name and address of the person
authorising the use of their address. You will also be required to complete an unregistered vehicle permit application form (as per attached). If there is any number plates associated with the vehicle you must hand them in.

Please note, the attached UVP application form must be taken to the Pink Slip mechanics for the inspector to sign and stamp.

You will need to nominate what day the permit starts and finishes and
what main roads you will be travelling on.

The permit itself costs $17 and the insurance will vary depending on
how long you want the permit for.

Please also remember that these permits are only designed for a single journey from A to B.

Gday, first off Roger, I just picked up my import aproval the other day, was not that hard my bike is over 15 years and I have owned it over one year. It did take a few months but part of this was that I needed also to provide a certifed copy of my passport and receipt of sale (which was not listed in requirements) as I was in Thailand at the time was a little trickier. Has all came through so am now wait to see what stress customs will give me.

Roger do I still need to get a compliance plate for my bike even though the model of my bike has been in Australia for years??

Brett sounds like the NSW are a little more anal then the laid back NT but I wont hold my breath till I have the paper in my hand! Below is a reply from requirements for temp rego here.
