Registering a US bought bike in the UK

This site has been AWESOME at answering all of my questions - but I fear this one might be one step too far....

First, I want to import my USA registered bike into the UK. I have to get it insured. Has anyone got their foreign bike insured in the Uk before importing it (ie without a UK reg. plate) if so who did you use?

Secondly and ( I don't expect anyone has done this - and I will be trying to contact BMW somehow) I have the DVLA 55/5 forms and one of the things I have to do is get a certificate of Conformity from the manufacturer. I bought the bike in the US but it was built in Germany. Where/how do I get a certificate of conformity???

You should be able to get it insured using the chassis number.

Re the insurance, when I brought my Aussie bike back to the UK, Carole Nash only gave me like a month of temporary insurance saying I had to get it registered before they would give a full years insurance. I managed to extend it slightly while going through the registration process as it took a while.

Don't know about letters of conformity but I had to get an SVA test done at an approved centre (bike was a 2006 DR650, failed as it didn't have a 5w running light...), pay import duty/VAT to Customs and get those certificates to the DVLA to get it registered and get the UK reg number.
