Registering a motorcycle in USA

Hi,
I'm german and I plan to do a trip from the USA to South America.
I bought a vehicle in Ohio and got a Ohio certificate of title and a 30-day plate. I wanted to register the bike in Virginia, because I have some good friends there, so the address on the title is their Virginia address.
I could not register it, because the Virginia DMV needs a "proof of address", which I can't provide, because I'm just a tourist.
So my question is:
Is there any way to register the bike in Virginia or another US-state for a foreigner (non-resident)? I've read this forum and found some posts saying it would be no problem in California or Nevada, but do I have to "proof", that I'm a resident there?
If it's not a problem in these states, could anybody "borrow" me his address?

You don't have to prove it in California. Some Aussies registered thier bikes using my adress and it went fine.

Oh, and yes, you can use my address. Just send me a PM

Thanks for your kind offer, Pete, but it's not necessary anymore.
After 4 visits at 2 different Virginia DMVs with 2 different managers and 4 different clerks, 100 Phone Calls and a lot of nerves I finally got my bike titled and registered here in Virginia.
Seems that it depends on the person you're speaking with...
Now I'm finally heading south to Florida and then to Central/South America.

Have a great trip. I did that ride and enjoyed plenty.

Consider a blog on this site so we can follow along on your trip. You can look in on my travels thru Central and South America here www.horizonsunlimited.com/tstories/rickmcd
Good travels!

I already have a blog at Pert in Danger , but it's in german language. It also has some "translate" buttons, but the translation is made by Google word-by-word and so probably will not make much sense. But feel free to watch the Photos or write a comment.

Good luck with your trip. By the way, which US insurance company did you use? I'm just curious because then if someone from overseas asks me about how one would go about getting insurance, I can cut to the chase and give them the name of a company that accepts applicants without a US drivers license. (If you have a US driver's license, then nevermind).

I have an policy at American International Underwriters (www.aiu.com). It's a partner of American International Group. I don't have an american drivers license, just the EU- and the international license.
