Firstly thanks for the info I've found so far. This is a great site.

I'm currently in London and hoping to take my bike to Australia. I have no plans to return to the UK in the near future and would like to sell the bike when I get to Oz. With carnets etc does anyone know if this is possible and if so how would I go about it?

Hi Marcel,

You might have problems with that mate. From what I can tell from going through the threads is that Oz now requires a Carnet, plus they have reasonably tough import regs which might be difficult to get around.
Another option: get the bike over to NZ, should not be a problem registering the bike there (I take it you're a kiwi) and getting Customs to validate your Carnet to that effect, you may then be able to post the Carnet back to the UK (or wherever you're getting it from) for the refund. I'm sure the RAC over here would be able to answer these questions, problem is you don't wanna give 'em too much info, if you now what I'm saying!

I would suggest that you don't tell anyone your intentions.
I foolishly stated on my Carnet application that I would be exporting the bike into SA.
Now my carnet says in big bold letters: NOT VALID FOR SOUTH AFRICA, BOTSWANA, NAMIBIA, so instead of sorting everythingout in my own time in my home town, I will have shit to deal with at the Botswanan border.

I called RAC (anonymously)who told me one way trip's were not possible. People must get around this surely.

Geoff is correct, it's best not to advise the auto association of your intentions in advance, lest you confuse them. The instinctive response is usually 'NO', so best not to ask the question!

Of course people do sell their vehicles in foreign countries rather than returning them to the country where the carnet was issued. The whole point of the carnet is to ensure that you don't sell a vehicle in a country WITHOUT paying all the customs duties and taxes in that country. If you have paid them, and can prove it, the auto association is not fussed.

So if you sold your bike in Australia, you will need to have all required Australian customs docs duly signed off attesting to the fact that you have paid any customs duties, sales taxes etc. due in Australia. Then you send the carnet plus the customs docs back to the RAC with a letter of explanation, you should be able to get your deposit back.

The HUGE POSSIBLE ISSUE is whether you can legally import and register your bike in Australia. You might assume that because it is registered in the UK that it should be able to be imported easily into Australia, but that might be an expensive assumption.

I suggest you start with the Australia Customs Services site for info to help you calculate the customs duties and taxes which you would have to pay on importing the bike.

As Pete said, you might have an easier time in NZ if you're a Kiwi, but that may not help if you want to end up in Oz with your bike!
