On a work visa - need a carnet?

Hello,

I was planning to teach English in Syria for a year. Would a work visa make you exempt from carnet obligations? I believe carnets are for tourist purposes only...???

Kind regards,

Ross

I think you'll still need a carnet. Even if you're on a work visa you're still importing the bike into Syria. I have residency here in India, but would definitely need a carnet to bring my bike here.

You could pay the import duty and register the bike with Syrian plates, but that may well cost more than a carnet. Otherwise you'll need a big diplomatic bag to smuggle it in!

in 1999 you were able to get a bike into syria without a carnet for an extra us$40 above the usual "carnet processing fee" (which was a few bucks???). don't know if things are different now in light of the present political situation in that area.

A carnet is a Customs TEMPORARY import/export document. Why, how and what you are doing in any country doesn't change that.

Sam.
