No Carnet needed for S America...so how do you get your bike

From MattPope's responses below it seems very clear there is no need to get a carnet for S America.

How do you get your bike into the first country without such a doc. At this stage I am intending to ship (by sea) my bike to Veneuzela?

At the port/airport of entry the customs people give you a temporary import permit. This is surrendered to customs each time you leave a country and a new one is issued by customs in the country you're entering. You need your V5 with you.

NOTE: we do not recommend shipping your bike by sea into Venezuela. Too much hassle at the ports, and unreliable shippers.

Read the shipping pages ("Getting There" on left) in detail for full information on shipping and procedures.

Thanks, though I have to say on the face of it (like the info says) it looks a lot cheaper. Are there any preferred ports in the North of S America?
