New York State Insurance -PLEASE help!

Can anyone recommend a NY State insurer who will provide cover if you have a foreign licence (UK)?

I've had a hell of a day. I have bought a Harley and want to register it so I can get some licence plates and begin my trip. I have cover from Dairyland, but they are based in Wisconsin so the New York DMV rejected that insurance and won't allow me to register until I get cover from a NY State insurance company.

I've called Allstate, Progressive, Geico, Nationwide, and about 12 brokers, and ended up with nothing, because they all want a US drivers licence. Surely someone will recognise a UK licence? I even have the International Driving Permit.

8 years of no claims, no accidents, no convictions, but still no insurance! Frustrating! :taz:

Any help/suggestions gratefully received!

One very confident poster in this thread (http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...o-not-us-77508) seemed to think it'd be easy for you. Can you get a temporary tag as he suggested? Didn't think so….no insurance.

It's a bit late at this time, but you really should've bought your bike in another state. Having said that, is it possible to travel without the bike to a state more friendly to non-residents, get a local address there, register the bike and then return with your new plate to New York? Maybe you've always wanted to visit Florida or Arizona during mid-summer? Or California, New Mexico, or any of the other states which reportedly make registering a bike easy for non-residents?

Search on this site for threads on the subject. There've been many.

Hope that's helpful.

Take a NY test

I researched this extensively as I was going to buy a bike in NY state because I have family who live there. The problem is that the state does not allow a foreign driver to have insurance. The only way around the problem is to take a new york test and they will ask you to surrender your foreign license.

Progressive are the best company to insure a foreign driver who is not a US resident.

I have looked at lots of states and used Maryland because they seem very foreign driver friendly which I wonder is because of all the foreign diplomats in the area.

Best of luck,
Lilian
