New Paperwork needed for Australia
 

Dear Motorcycle Travelers, we just heard from two Swiss travelers that Australia demands an import permit prior to shipping the bikes to Australia.
That means you have to fill out some forms, make some copies of supporting documents and get a permission after 17 working days, hopefully.
You will find all details under www.dotars.gov.au/transreg/vsb_10.htm .
We just have mailed them our applications. We keep you posted about our progress.

I've been told that these new regulations don't apply if you're importing your bike with a carnet. Can anyone confirm this? Do you have a carnet for your bike?

Story

The permit is required by the Department of Transportation and has nothing to do with Customs. Therefore you need a carnet anyway, and the permit before the bikes arrives in Australia. There is a detailed description on the URL we mentioned.
