need a motorbike licence?? 2010

Hey Guys,

I am 24 and from england currently backpacking around the world, i am in austrailia at the moment and i really want to ride a motorbike home from India in oct/nov 2010, i do not hold a motorbike licence but a Full UK driving licence. Can i do a test in india? i can do one here in oz but apprantly i have to re-do my CBT then wait 6months to apply for the full.

I have done lots of research which i am getting excited about, Is there a way i can get a motorbike licence whilst overseas.

Also if you have any other infomation i may need, send it through! as i need it :)

Cheers,
Pete

Just get a licence here in Oz

There is nothing on there that anyone overseas would recognise anyway and it will limit you to 250cc.

For a beginner, a 250cc is a good start for going through Asia

thanks mate.

The NT Police are saying i have to be on my L's for 6months before i can apply for the main test, however i leave OZ in a few months.

If i do the "L plate course" could i still buy and ride a bike in india?

Do you know if i could do a test in india that could be cheaper and quicker?

cheers,
Pete

Hi Scooterpete!

If you can get down Melbourne/Victoria way, you can get your licence a lot quicker than in the NT. I know because I'm going through the process here at the moment.

You basically get a Learner Permit first (which you can get by doing a day's course with a short test at the end). Then after 3 months on the Learner Permit you can go for your test to get your actual motorbike licence. Once you pass that, you can ride anywhere you like, with certain restrictions on the size of the bike - but you'll be able to ride a 250cc and even bigger at that point. Once you've got your bike licence, that gets added to your car licence, and you can then convert that to an International Drivers Licence that will let you drive a car or bike anywhere in the world!

Hope that helps!

Have a look at Six steps to Q-Ride
which is a potentially quicker way to get a bike licence in Queensland.

Its a pain with all the different licences in each State - the Feds/States are conducting some long term research on the best method of licencing new riders/drivers - looking at accident rates as the method of seeing what is better.
