Motorcycle travel/medical insurance

Finally got a policy figured out, and I thought I'd give the cliffs notes version here. I am a US citizen, under 29 y/o, traveling overland from the US to Panama and back. I just left my job, so I have no US health insurance for the US-overland sections of my trip, which seemed scary to me given the price of health care here. Solution:

Multi-National Underwriters (International Travel Insurance & International Health Insurance | MNUI) which was recommended on this site a couple of times. Their Atlas International seems to provide excellent medical coverage abroad ($1,000,000 medical coverage; $500,000 med-evac) for a very reasonable price, and if you select "Sports Rider" coverage you're covered to ride your own motorcycle (except for racing). The only exemption there is you don't get the full-liability payout for accidental death or dismemberment. That means if I get in an accident on my bike in Mexico, they'll cover all my medical expenses up to $1,000,000 and evec if necessary, but if I lose a hand in the process I won't get the $1,000,000 payout for it.

They also cover terrorist, natural disaster and death-in-the-family stuff. No theft/trip interruption/airliner stuff, which is fine by me.

What really was good for me, is that they also offer short-term medical care in the US. I got a one-month policy for $74 that covers all my life activities in the US, so I'm covered by that until the border, then the Atlas International kicks in after I cross into Mexico.

As always, hope I don't have to test it out, but if I do I'll let you know how it pans out.

Tip: if you're filling out the application and are writing in the box "describe your Sports Rider activities", keep it to just a few words or the system won't let you proceed.

Cheers,
Sarah

Hi Sarah,

I'd like to know how this insurance worked out for you. I'm starting a RTW trip in July and will also be needing insurance.

PS: I hope you didn't have to use it.

Smitty
