Motorcycle isurance for south america

Hi all.,

I am planing on traveling with a Canadian registered bike from Santiago Chile back to Canada. Does any one know what the bike insurance requirements are for Chile and the countries I will be traveling through. I did get some hint that I may be able to purchase at the border crossing, insurance for the country I am entering. Any one with experience in this area.

Thanks,
Yukonneely

You will be able to find all the information by searching this forum. It is a very common question.

As far as a know the countries that demand it also sell it at the border crossing. You wont be arrested for not having it anywhere but maybe just asked for a small bribe.

I dont belive in their insurance so I dont do it for my trip unless I am forced too. Rather solve it on the spot with some big dollar bills if need be.

But anyways you can look around and the info is there.

Forgery -- this works -- sheaves of English language papers with "insurance" written on them in several languages -- easy.

Legal well I know the USA needs insurance and a motorcycle endorsement dont know about getting the insurance at the border. Mexico you need insurance and depending on where you cross you can get it at the border. I know some one will be willing to sell you "insurance" at any border but if you need it or its real or will do you any good at all I dont think so.

Legal well cops stopping you and demanding fines fees (bribes) from you is not legal but they do that. People setting up an office and selling you "insurance" that there is no going to pay it off is not legal people do that to.

But yes down south you can get insurance at or near the border if you need it. Just ask the helpers at the border they will set you real good. :innocent:

Oh and you know about the Colombia to Panama thing?

Columbia Panama thing

Yes thank you I know about the Columbia Panama thing and am thinking the best is to fly myself and the bike from Bogata to Panama. I have a place to stay in Panama supposedly close to the airport so this should make things easier. Friends here are from Columbia and are advising me.

Thanks,

Magallanes insurance in Santiago

The following thread will give you details of the Magallanes bike insurance available in Santiago. I found it cheap (3rd party damage only).

Yukonneely,
I just put this thread, as I had a very close encounter with the Chilean law after a bad crash. Have a look, it may answer some of your questions. Also all details of my crash, and dealing with insurances, and suing someone will be in my website soon.
