Motorbike Insurance Egypt
 

Hi,
we are planning our Cairo-Captown tour starting in mid december 2013.
Our two bikes will be shipped overseas to Alexandria. I have read in a travel report, that it was possible to get the needed local Third Party Liability insurance at the port in Alexandria. But I don´t know if any insurance agency is still there. As there are arriving much less overlanders at the port it might be, that it is not possible to get this insurance and the plates at the port.
In another report they had much trouble regarding the customs. It took one week to get the vehicle out of the customs at the port.
To avoid any surprise and to manage as much as possible now, we want to organize the insurance and the plates in advance.
Does anybody know how to proceed with this, especially at the port in Alexandria?

Hi, you're in for loads of frustration but also for great rides, if you find petrol, and if they sell you.

I was in Egypt for some years until recently. I suggest to forget about fixing things up in advance because you'll likely find out upon arrival that it didnt work, and you will have lost time and money. Insurance should be available, and actually mandatory to get the plate.

One week seems to be standard for temporary imports. e ready to curb your enthusiasm, and remember to smile, go through this as an experiment, not as a must achieve goal, it will take time and you won't understand why. It will cost lots and many times, sometimes with receipts in Arabic. You need to get a good fixer, but then again how to pick is the trick. I'd recommend to find a good fixer recommended by the shipping agent / forwarder, depending on the shipping company you use. Just remember when you pay peanuts, you get monkeys.

Egyptians have a say in Alexandria: Look at the mountain and smile. I trust you'll think if this sentence when the "fun fun fun" factor kicks-in. Enjoy Egypt, great country, great people, but shameful bureaucratic corruption to the bone. Juts stay cool and keep plenty of small bank notes in various pockets.

As the trip to Alexandria is incalculable, we will plan our tour with the Grimaldi Ferry to Israel. Then Jordan and Sinai. The boarders are already known and its much cheaper.
I hope we will be happy after the ferry of Aswan.
