Mongolian Visa
 

Starting to plan more of a details for my overland trip from Vladivostok to Europe. Where can I get a Mongolian visa in Russia before entering Mongolia. I do not want to get them in Australia, as I am not sure how long I will be in Russia before I cross to Mongolia (I was thinking about crossing at Solov'yevsk), so do not want to go to Irkutsk or Ulan Ude, unless I have to. Is there a consulate in Vladivostok? Is it difficult to get the visa in Russia? I ahve Australian Passport.

I think you are making it more difficult than necessary. Typically you get a Mongolian visa which is valid for 90 days, so in 90 days you should enter the country. And then get 30 days inside the country.

From Vladivostok to Mongolia is done within 2 weeks. Unless you're going to Magadan and back or stuff like that.

Vladivostok doesn't seem to have an embassy. And then you would have to stay there and wait.
Some people go to the embassy in Ulan-Ude to get a visa there. That seems your best option, you can visit lake Baikal as well.
Or just get it in Australia.

Might have to get it in Oz, but not sure how long i will be in South Korea and Eastern Russia. In the worst case I will Ulan-Ude

There are consulates in Ulan Ude, Kyzyl and Irkutsk. Also an honorary consul in Elista, but they were useless when I visited.

In other words, you will need to back-track if you want to enter Mongolia in at Solovyevsk (a nice way to enter, the far east is very nice grassland which most visitors miss) and don't have a visa before entering Russia.

Ideal would be consulate in Vladivostok, but since there is not one, then I will have to sort it out otherwise, most likely will get visa in Oz just before I leave.

You don't have any plans at all? South Korea is nice, but I would think you would have a rough idea if your spending 2 months there or 2 weeks. And like I said, if you're not going to make any detours, the east of Russia is pretty straight forward.

What you could do is just get a Mongolian visa in your last week before departure. And if it happens to run out, you get a new one in Ulan Ude.

I have lots of plans, I could spend 6 months in East Russia, just the coast north of Vladivostok could take couple of month to properly explore. I have been planning for about 4 years now. Problem is that I focus too much on detail. I start to investigate one spot and I find another near by and another... and it just piles up..... oh well I might never get there in the end :-)

Sounds more like you have been dreaming instead of planning :) which is good!

But we cannot decide for you. Either already get it in Australia, and perhaps need to get a new one in Ulan Ude if not on time, or don't bother at all and just get one in Ulan Ude when you are there.
Third option is to check for a visa application in South-Korea before you leave.

Next to all that, the winters are pretty though in Siberia and Mongolia. So at some point, you will need to move forward.
