I came into Mexico from Laredo at the end of May. Insurance is not compulsory, unfortunatelly I did not buy an insurance and had an accident in Tepic almost two months ago. There is no pleace at the border to get insurance, but you can find few in Laredo-USA. As far as I can remember it was around 250USD for two months for 2008 KLR650.

Obviously neither of these two recently joined posters have been paying attention to other posts on the HUBB over the last few years or else they would not be expressing these ideas. There have been numerous posts explaining this from many contributors, myself included.
In the last two weeks one post by Xfiltrate did a very nice essay on why you should buy Mexico liability insurance. It is indeed compulsory, but nobody there is going to force you to buy it .

Now to elucidate a bit more.
Mexico liability insurance must be bought ON THE USA SIDE OF THE BORDER. Do not ride into Mexico and expect then to buy it. On the US side in every bOrder town and bOrder city you will find plenty of sources , look for their signs on store fronts and gas stations, business malls ....
Very good suppliers of such insurance are Sanborns Insuranc www.sanbornsinsurance.com and MexUS Insurance Mexican Auto Insurance - Lorenz Insurance - Since 1921, www.bajamex.com and others.
Determine how long you want to be inMexico to decide what to buy
.
Take note :there are two types of liability insurance policy you can buy for MEXICO.
One is the vehicle nominated trip insurance where you buy insurance for the one specific vehicle you are using to enter Mexico on that trip . The policy will be made out to your name AND the specific bike or car you are using and will be valid for X -days.The rate will be on a per day basis and will get slightly more economical as the trip is made out for more days. But it will become expensive and I bet this is why Yol . paid his $250US for two months.

The other type of policy is an annual DRIVERS LICENSE POLICY.Here the policy is made out to your name and to YOUR DRIVERS LICENSE NUMBER. No mention of any vehicle type or brand is on the policy. You are free to ride any bike or car you own for a WHOLE YEAR. And it is a whole lot less expensive .
I have for several years now been buying an ANNUAL POLICY of drivers license insurance from Mex US Insurance Service, Calexico California and am happy with it . I get a whole year of liability insurance for Mexico for only $181 US and take multiple trips per year to Mexico with either of my bikes or a car. They now send me a renewal form in the mail and I get another year's cover.
Do the math: are you going to stay in Mexico for a few days or for a month , and find at which point the annual policy works out as less expensive. I found that the tipping point in favour of the annual dl - policy is around the 34 day mark. Also, you must ask about the driverslicense policy at the insurance agency because it seems they do not readily volunteer that information, perhaps because it is not such a good moneymaker for them.
Brian , you did not specify at which point you are planning to cross into Mexico , but you will have no difficulty locating the insurance sellers. You could also do it via internet, but that puts you at a slight disadvantage for on the spot price shopping and date of initiating coverage , if you were planning just a brief visit to Mexico. With an annual policy such start date concerns do not count much..
