Kiwi bike in Europe

Hi All,
I am new to the Hubb so a bit lost. I have done a few searches, but there is so much info on here it is a bit daunting to try and find specific info, so here goes - my question is:
I am considering sending my old Super Tenere to somewhere in Europe to pick up and then use for a grand tour next year and then re-ship back to New Zealand. From what i understand to legally use in European countries i will need:
Valid MOT/WOF/roadworthy from NZ
Valid NZ registration
3rd part insurance for all European countries to visit
Proof of all above
I do not need a carnet?
Is there anything else i need?
Thanks in advance for all advice
Cheers,
Mike

Mike welcome on board to the HUBB. I've ridden from oz to Europe a few times over the last 35 years. The only valid documentation you really need is rego on your bike and a current licence.

Carnets are not necessary for Europe - only for some of the countries in between if riding overland (I understand you are not). I only took out insurance when it was required as a condition of entry to a country. I was only asked in two european countries - Russia and Croatia, and they sold it to me at the border.

Risking riding uninsured is something that each individual has to decide about for themselves. Given the considerable risks I took in riding through 3rd world countries where insurance was unobtainable, I personally felt more than comfortable in not taking out insurance in first world europe.

The only other item which is worth bringing is a strong sense of adventure, but I am sure you have that already if you contemplating such a journey. :thumbup1:

Garry is right, you don't need a Carnet in Europe. But you usually need 3rd party, even if you can get away without it, if you are controlled (at a border or routine police check) or have an accident and you don't have the greencard (3rd party insurance) then it is up to local law enforcement to decide whether to lock you up, order you to pay a hefty fine or otherwise.... if this happens you want to be able to run, fast back to NZ! :nono:

There are a few 3rd party insurers in Europe but they are all expensive. Depending how you arrive you may get checked by customs... others may be able to comment on this.

I am riding on my Aussie plates from NSW and have valid greencard from Milan MotoTouring. They are listed under paperwork in the forum, just look for greencard.

Apart from that you need to decide where to go. Let me know if you need help planning as after 1year riding the alps I have some suggestions to offer.

Enjoy and if in Switzerland PM me for a beer beerhttp://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...ilies/beer.gif

If WoF and rego are nearing expiry take the stickers off. Nobody knows anything about them.

Bring your certificate of reg with you. I don't think it has an expiry date. I haven't got mine here, so I can't check.

Get an oval NZ country sticker from the AA and put it on the back of the bike. It's a legal requirement that nobody but Austrian police seem to care about, but it's good to have anyway.

As mentioned above, GC insurance is required and with exotic plates you are more likely to get pulled over. No GC = end of trip until you can produce one.

Thanks

Cheers Guys,
I may start by trying Carole Nash for EU insurance as i have heard good things regarding their service/pricing etc.
General plan is at the moment to ship bike to Yamaha dealer in Rome and then Italy,Greece, Adtriatic coast countries, Austria, Germany, Holland, UK, IOM TT, UK, France, Switz, Italy, fly home and ship bike back to NZ. 4 to 5 months.
Cant wait!:taz:

Mike,

I'm doing a shipment of bikes from NZ to Felixstowe in the UK in March next year to arrive early May. I have access to Fully Comp insurance for your bike.
I'll be in Chch between 11 and 16 Nov if you want to catch up or email me on dave@getrouted.com.au

Kind regards
Dave Milligan
