Jordan and motorcycles

I heard...

That motorcycles are not popular in Jordan and you need a special letter from the King or a close relation to the King to get permission to drive a motorbike in Jordan. And there is a story about how the King finds motorcycles too dangerous and reckless.

I've been to the Jordanian Embassy in London and explained my intention to drive my motorbike across Jordan and explained my concerns with the above... I've been ASSURED that its fine to pitch at the border and get a visa for Jordan even if driving a motorbike. There will be no problems. (The guy laughed at me but says there is no problem.)

Has any body experienced biking through Jordan recently? I tend to agree with the Embassy but will be very miffed to discover my trip is a big mess because I didn't persue getting a letter from the King...

Was somebody pulling my leg?

No problem with motorbikes

I was there in December 05. There was absolutely no problem with getting a visa or a temporary import permit for a motorbike at the border. After dealing with painful Egyptian bureacracy, the border crossing into Jordan was an absolute breeze.

As discussed in other parts of this forum, don't bother taking the desert highway as it is boring - best to stick with the Kings highway, which is quite scenic in parts.

cheers

did it in May 2006 - no problem

Hi there
Khim and I just spent almost a month in Jordon in May/June 2006. We are riding two BMW R100 GS. We entered Jordan by ferry from Egypt at Aqaba and then left through the border with Syria. It was absolutely no problem bringing the bike in. Driving in Jordan is easy and safe and we had a lot of fun. Jordon is truly beautiful.
We are in the middle of updating our web-page, which will list all the latest info on camping, gps tracks and border procedures. Should be up in a couple of days, so have a look.

have fun

i was in jordan jan 2005. awesome country to ride through. my only problem was that they would only allow me to ride the bike in the country for 2 or 3 days. if you go to amman, you can have this extended or you can just carry on riding and pay a small 'fine' when you leave the country. you must also buy insurance at the border and it's worth buying enough insurance for your intended stay if you think the cops will stop you. i was told they don't bother about your driving period allowance being expired, as long as you have insurance but i was never stopped by the cops and i don't even remember seeing any cops on the roads.
enjoy the trip
