is moroccan insurance really that expensive?

i'm going to morocco in two weeks but struggling with insurance.

my 3rd party f&t swinton insurance, which covers europe, costs about £100 - but they won't cover morocco. the cheapest one that can do it is Aviva through Carol Nash - but they want about £400 for the year plus a surplus for visiting morocco. sounds a bit too much...

apparently buying insurance at the border won't cover theft.

does anyone have any advice?

thanks
luke

Personally I never got insurance. Fully intended to, but never found anywhere until Fez, and they wanted £100 for a month (minimum) and we had to go back the following dy, so didn't bother.

Maybe I got lucky, but no-one stopped us to ask for it...

I am sure you will get replies to your question soon, but in Jan 06 I crossed from Ceuta into Morocco and could not get in without insurance, it was €50 for 10 day, so I had to take it, but I needed some more insurance for the return so a Belgian friend and I got a 'bit creative' with our paperwork which 'covered me' for Morocco, Mauri, Senegal and the Gambia, I even produced it when I was stopped by Police for speeding in Morocco.
I see you do not have enough posts to pm me for more details, but you can email me at dave(at)kdmcc(dot)com

Make it quick as I am away from Friday!!

Luke FZ6, I have pm'd you with details!

hi

when i was in morocco last year did not find any place to buy a insurance until ourzazate. so i simply ignore it. even i have been stopped by the police for a speed ticket in marakkesh, he did not ask me for a insurance. just presented my driving licence and v5 and paid 40 euros for speeding.

hope this helps

Was in Morocco a few months ago, intended to buy insurance at the border but like the rest could not find a place to buy it. I was never stopped by the police even though I rode through several dozen checkpoints. Not sure if you are in a car or on a moto, but do you really need theft insurance? In most places it is pretty easy to find secure parking at night.

thanks all

thanks everyone - i think i'll get whatever i have to at the border (maybe i'm not artistic enough for dave's excellent scheme) and just be really careful with secure parking.

thanks again!

There isn't any at the border any more, which is why none of us got it!

In 06 they would not have let me in without any, glad things have changed!

There is at the border at Tanger, but I arrived on the first ferry and would have had to wait two hours for the place to open.
