Insuring a car in the UK with EU driving license

I've had wildly differing advice on this, I want to borrow my Dad's HiLux while we're in the UK, but I have a Spanish driving license. Does anyone know a cheap way of doing this?

We previously got cover for about 30GBP, but the things I'm looking at now are all prohibitively expensive so maybe I'm looking in the wrong place!

Surely you can be added to your Dad's insurance as a "named driver"? I've driven a friend's car in the UK this way.

Same issue with having/not having a UK driving licence would apply.

Exactly, the driving license is the sticking point (which you don't necessarily need to be added, but would make the insurance void if one were to have an accident )

In case it's useful to anyone else in the future, I tried using GoCompare but then couldn't actually get insurance from the first two suggested companies because *reasons*.

I success through Tempcover.com (part of Compare The Market), which ended up a good chunk more expensive, but they specifically ask if you're formerly British and borrowing a vehicle from friends or family.

There's a long list of restrictions, ie. can't work in the steel industry or as a DJ, but you can't be unemployed either? A bit weird, but that was a needle I could thread.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
