insurance no-man's land

Hey folks, I'm a noob here so apologies if this has been covered before but my issues are quite specific so I don't think it'll easy to find by searching...

I'm trying to figure out insurance etc but I seem to fall into a place where no-one wants to insure me...

1) I'm Irish passported
2) I've been travelling for the last year so don't fall "resident" in any actual country for insurance purposes.
3) I want to buy a scooter in Italy (and hence register it in Italy)
4) I want to travel eastward from there (balkans, turkey, iran....)
5) I have a swiss driving license and International driving license (which is really just a translation of the swiss license).

The reason for buying in Italy, is firstly that it's cheaper, and secondly, that I can buy a 125cc on a car license whereas int he rest of Europe I can only buy 50cc. I can then drive through Italy and take a test before leaving allowing me to continue on from there.

So far, my issues have been that without a residency I can't get insurance, be it in Ireland or anywhere else, and I may also struggle to buy the scooter in Italy since I'm not resident there but I gather that there are ways around that.

Does anyone know an insurance company that may be able to help? Or in fact, have any other information that may help? I'm about to scrap the whole idea and just bus and train it around instead but that really seems so second rate...

Thanks and sorry for such a horrible first post...

You might try:

Mototouring - motorcycle / bike rental, motorcycle tours and riding tours throughout the world in Milano; suggest you call & speak to
owner, Eligio Arturi, Tel: + 39 - 02.2720.1556
Although the Euro Green Card he brokers is for non-European registered
vehicles only, he's experienced enough w/ Italy rules to perhaps offer
rego + insurance solution, for your very unusual circumstances;

If that doesn't work, try
Green Card
in Germany, call or email owner Stefan Knopf.
The Euro Green Card (ADAC/ Arisa) Euro Green Card he brokers might be
able to fit your circumstances.

Hey Andrew - thanks for that. I gave her a call and she was really helpful.

Just to close out the post with the info I got...

I was basically told that it's quite hard for foreigners to get insurance in Italy and I'd have to be insured by an Italian registered insurance company. Outside of Italy Alessie could help insure me though the insurance would be very expensive (the same cost for all forms of scooter or motorbike up to the most powerful). I think it was around 750euro for 6 months or over a thousand for a year. This wouldn't include Italy but would include the rest of Europe. She advised me to look at buying it outside of Italy and then if the costs weren't prohibitive then they'd be able to consider by request (obviously they couldn't committ over the phone but I got they didn't expect any issues).

Hope this helps anyone else searching for something similar... :)
