Insurance in Africa
 

Hello,

just wondering, has anyone organised comprehensive insurance for their 4wd for an Africa trip?

Everything I read here seems to be about 3rd party only.

If anyone has any links / email addresses for potential insurers I'd appreciate them. I'm guessing it would be expensive, but I'd like to find out how much.

I'll be driving an Aus registered Troopy but travelling on a UK passport.

I've been asking the same questions without much luck.

There is a company (Touch Stuff) in South Africa who will insure it South of the Equator and Kenya. I have not had much luck finding anything further North.

Surely this company can't be the only one out there offering insurance for overlanders precious wheels though?

I have been looking into this for a while without success and the only advice I ever got was this one company...

In ten years of mucking about with this overland travel gig - Campell Irvine is the only name that comes up - they are the only company who offer this insurance (on a reliable basis) that I have heard of.

But most people don't get it as their vehicle is worth less that GBP15,000 etc

What is relevance of the GBP15k? Do they not insure vehicles of a lesser value, or do people just not bother?

The cost of the insurance is high (Think GBP2-3,000+). If the vehicle is worth 10,000 then most people take the risk rather than pay the insurance.

Also, many trips are for more than 12 months, so you would end up paying the premium twice. If it was GBP2,000, then you would pay GBP4,000 to insure a vehicle worth GBP10,000.

So most don't take the insurance....

Medical, absolutely. Dodgy local, if you have to. Anything else is just expensive and of questionable use.

Your comments aren't very constructive mate.

It is available, and some people have a need for it, or their trip expenses are being paid by others so they can pass on the costs.

Accepted :rolleyes2: but you'd be surprised how many europeans have this concept that insurance in africa is anything more than just a piece of paper and most people reading this thread will be arriving via [Post: 24hrs] link, appreciate some humour and besides it keeps this thread on top.

Besides the risk of losing a vehicle is considerably lower than theft of the contents - I've not heard anyone suggest insuring the contents of their truck.

I thought the joke was funny....

Anyway, Tough Stuff Insurance in South Africa will give you comprehensive insurance, including the extras on your vehicle and some content as all risk for Africa South of the Equator and the hole of Kenya. The quote I got for a 1996 TLC with about GBP5k of extras was around GBP60 a month.
4x4 Insurance | Off-Road Services They cover for water damage and repatriation of you and the vehicle. It is a great product! But does not cover the hole trip for me. I'm definitely getting it for the first parth though!

I got another contact in Namibia who apparently charges 8% per year of the value of your vehicle. I have not contacted him yet.

My vehicle, with the equipment in it is about 50% of my Net Worth, so I'm really not sure that crossing Africa without insurance is something I'd really want to do.

I got a really good deal on Camera Equipment insurance. (My camera gear is worth more than the car by a lot) GBP 25 000 of equipment at all risk for just over GBP600 a year.

That sounds like a good deal on the camera equipment - photoguard.co.uk are quite good at vehicle based trips worldwide as well (covers in car equipment etc) but your deal sounds very good if it includes all of that.

Check the fine print though that you are still covered when in a country that is listed on the FCO travel advisories/warnings page, as they usually don't cover you when you are in one of these countries (at least for medical/travel insurance).

Just got my quote from Mike at Campbell Irvine, and it's a lot less than I was expecting.

12 months fire and theft on my troopy valued at AU$20,000 for GBP693 (AU$1,400 at the moment).

Asked about FCO advice and the reply was that it doesn't matter, the insurance is all countries worldwide except US and Canada.

That's not including vehicle contents, but if I can list a camera on my travel insurance I don't see why my fridge can't go on there too!

$20,000 is GBP 9,890 - so roughly 7% of the cost. Not bad.

Is VAT charged on insurance?

What about if you crash it, are held up at gunpoint, hit another vehicle or are struck by a falling tree etc?

Tax is included in the price quoted.

Insurance I got the quote for is just fire and theft, so not including accidental damage caused by crashing etc. If we're held up at gunpoint and they take the truck I would hope that would be covered as theft.

If that terrible scenario was to happen, I doubt very much the insurance would cover it as that would probably come under a 'civil unrest' clause or something of the like-
Read the fine print or better still, the missing print...
As it says on $ bills -'In God we trust', anything/one else....check carefully and whatever you agree, get it in writing and in detail.

I think it's a bot steep, so I'll try to get local Insurance agencies again. Tough Stuff will do to Kenya and South of Equator for half that with some seriously good benefits.
