Insurance, HELP!

Hello all,

Looking for some advice on the confusing world of insurance….

So, I am driving a Ghanaian (and Ghanaian registered) motorbike from Ghana to the UK. The bike is cheap new (c. £820) and worth even less now it’s a few years old.

With that in mind, my original plan was to buy Ghanaian insurance (which allows me to get an ECOWAS Brown Card – the equivalent of a European Green Card but for West Africa - that works in all the countries on this map) and then buy temporary insurance at the boarder for Mauritania.

However, I’m not clear on what insurance I need to bring the bike into Morocco and Europe (Spain, France and the UK). From my web research, I think I need to get a European Green Card. However, I am not clear on whether this can be issued against my bikes Ghanaian insurance? If a Green Card can be issued against Ghanaian (i.e. non EU) insurance, how do I go about buying it? No website I find looks particularly legitimate.

If a Green Card cannot be issued against Ghanaian insurance, how do I buy European (ideally British as this is my nationality) insurance on a Ghanaian registered bike? And if I do this, do I need a European Green Card as well?

I’m not bothered about comprehensive coverage (i.e. fire/theft) as the bike is worth nothing and I am happy to write that cost off if I need to (i.e. the bike is stolen)

Also, in addition to motorbike insurance. I was going to buy good personal travel (that includes medical cover for accidents that result from riding a motorbike) insurance, to cover me from a non-bike POV. However, I’m struggling to find anything as:
1) Policies are very unclear on whether motorbike riding is covered
2) Where they are clear – one constraint is often that you have a full motorbike license for your country of residence (which I don’t have as I only learnt to ride in Ghana and have not been back to the UK since. Moreover, I cannot get a Ghanaian license as I am not a permanent resident)
3) Some insurers will no longer cover travel in Mauritania

With all this in mind, can anyone recommend an organization that might be able to help?

Thanks in advance – this is literally leaving my mind boggled!

As I understand it a green card issued for a non-EU registered vehicle is a whole new policy and not issued against any other, it will give you legal minimum cover and be valid in all EU countries and perhaps a couple of others such as Switzerland. This is a few posts above your own in trip paperwork.

Hi Rory,

Like we spoke over Pm's, and just to bring more light to the question, and maybe help others as well.

Our border insurance coverage will insure you from the moment you exit the ferry and touch the Spanish ground (on the EU continent that is).

Morocco border insurance you can buy at the border, like you will have to do at the border of Mauritania.

We can insure your Ghanaian registered motorcycles with our third party liability insurance coverage policies/green card policies.

As for good personal travel insurance, I would go directly to some big European companies or some of the specialists in the field. There are threads here and on ADVrider which ones in real life showed their real value :thumbup1:

cheers
