INFORMATION ABOUT A BANK CREDIT?
 

Hi everybody,

Please help us out? DO we or do we not, need a bank credtit for a Carnet de Passage? We'll be travelling from Thailand to Holland on two Transalps. The Dutch RAC (ANWB) says we need to deposit f22.500 (10,000 US$) on their banking account. This amount is 75% of the new value of both the bikes. However bothbikes are secondhand and cost us about 6000$ together. We don't have 10,000 $ leftover. So what do we do?

There should be three ways to obtain a Carnet.

No.1 Leave money with your local motoring association as you have mentioned. Mine (New Zealand) wanted 350% of the bikes value. I think this is pretty standard rate stuff.

No.2 Provide the bank with some other form of security or collateral equivalent to the 350% valuation. Like a mortgage or even a Bank Guarantee supported by collateral from a third party - friends / family?

No.3 This is the best option. The motoring organisation should offer you an insurance policy with them. This was the equation for my Carnet which is in the throes of being prepared now. Based on a bike worth NZD5000.00. A.A = Automobile Association.

5000 x 350% = NZD 17,500.00
x 2% = NZD 350.00 actual insurance premium rate.
+ NZD 350.00 A.A deposit, refundable upon
discharge of Carnet + NZD 200.00 cost of Carnet - valid for 12 months?
TOTAL COST NZD 980.00.

NZD = roughly 1 DEM or about USD 44 cents.

I hope this clears things up for you. Yeah it's a pain in the arse and wallet but it's best to play by the rules in foreign lands.
